Most Valuable Career Skills

The biggest secret to continued career success is never standing still.  The people who jump through job levels at break neck speed are the people who continue to grow, study, learn and engage with other thought leaders in their field.  Most often, these highly successful people have career mentors, advisors or a personal coach to help them keep their head in the game.  What I can guarantee is that they are always learning new skills and perfecting the ones they already possess.

After college, it is important to continue your learning by reading industry related articles, blogs and journals.  Taking a certification course is also another way to help you advance your career.  I recently wrote an blog post for Small World about certifications which are helpful to career advancement in the logistics and supply chain industry.

As you look for places and opportunities to advance your career, keep in mind that these are some of the most sought after, in demand, skills that will bring you the higher salary and promotion.  These are the skills employers are willing to pay more for when they find them on your resume.  In the next few weeks, I’m going to write about what things you should leave off of your resume.

Current Top Employment Skills

  • Digital Marketing
  • Big Data
  • Strategic Planning
  • Strategy Development
  • Project Management
  • Financial Analysis
  • Business Analysis
  • Business Development
  • Technology Sales
  • IT and Security
  • Forecasting
  • Software Development
  • Contract Negotiation
  • P&L Knowledge and Responsibility
  • Business Management

Keep on Learning

The internet is packed with free online classes and courses, many with video tutorials. Many colleges also let you take classes for free if you are an alumni so be sure to check with your alma mater.  You can also check out LinkedIn’s new Lynda service where you’ll find over 4000 courses in Business, Technology and Creative Skills taught by industry experts.  They offer a free 10 day trial and then prices range from $20-30/month for as long as you want.

I always tell our candidates at Small World to think about what they would like to do next in their career and then I encourage them to make it happen by learning the necessary skills and then marketing that they posses them.  Don’t like what you’ve done in your past?  Then don’t showcase it all over your resume so that employers think you want to do it again.

Get out there and learn something new and take your career to the next level.
